Taking Stock

As the year cycles to an end, it is usually at this time that we reflect on the year that has passed and those that are close to us. While the world around us has been filled with struggles and strife, my own personal one has been filled with surprises and new beginnings. These events and people have taught me much this year and has also given me a new respect for the things that I have in my life.

First would by my sister, April, as kids we may have fought more like brother and sister but we have grown much closer over the years. Each new hardship we have encountered have made our relationship stronger. It wasn’t an easy place to get to, in fact it didn’t start to change until after I came out. She was with me when I buried my first lover and has stood by my side for each decision and event in my life.

Next would be my two best friends, Tammy and Brian. They have given me shelter when I have had nowhere to turn and when I needed to run. I have known them both for just short of twenty years. They have been by me in some of my darkest times and held the light for me to see my way through them. We may not always get along but they are my family.

The last one is the newest addition to my life, my boyfriend Karl. He has shown me more in nine months than I have seen in nine years. He has gotten me to try new things and change many of my bad habits. We both have experienced many dark things in our lives and that’s what gives us a common ground. He has strength inside him that he sometimes does not see and that strength gives me the courage to face my past to become a better person, for myself and him. I watch him get up and fight every day and it makes me wonder how I have questioned whether I could or not.

While this world is filled with things that challenge us and try to break us, it is the small things in our lives that give us the strength to keep fighting. As the New Year inches closer to us, take a moment to step back and count the blessings you have to rally your strength for the next year. Each of you who read my blog are also part of what keeps me going. Thank you for the time you give to consider my words, I write for you guys and hope that you will share any knowledge you get from what I post.
