While sitting in my study recently, I was thinking of new topics to write about when suddenly I was thinking about things from my childhood I missed and things that are still around but have somehow changed in various ways. My mind was transported back to my childhood when I was obsessed with  small braided bracelets I wore through most of my childhood. That led to this article. Enjoy! 

Who doesn’t know what a friendship bracelet is? Better yet, how many of you have one on right this very minute? I would argue that it is probably more than ten people will have something like it. As a child of the 80s, friendship bracelets were super popular. Everyone had them and I wanted one, as well. They defined a generation and still can be found gracing counter space in stores today. 

While their popularity hasn’t diminished all that much most people know very little about this wide spread fashion accessory. More than just colorful threads, friendship bracelets are woven with a rich history and a powerful message. From their possible roots in ancient civilizations to their vibrant resurgence in the 1970s, these simple bands have transcended trends to become enduring symbols of connection. I remember the very first time I saw a friendship bracelet. It was on the wrist of my best friend in fifth grade. It was a simple braided band of colored embroidery floss. As a child I never wore jewelry (other than a watch)  but I wanted this amazing woven beauty. I figured someone I knew must know something about them. As luck would have it, my cousins that lived in Roanoke, Virginia were those people. My older cousin Sonya not only knew about them, wore several, but was also a creator of them. Of course my city cousins would know, they lived in the city. 

**Side note – My sister and I always considered Roanoke, Va a large city. As kids, we were traveling to Roanoke one night and we were riding in the very back of our hatchback and we happened to see these spires of what looked like a castle rise into the skyline. Immediately, we both thought we had somehow gotten transported to Disneyland. Sadly, it was just a glorified Catholic Church. Nonetheless, it cemented in our collective memories that this was IN FACT a big city. 

My hopes had been answered, I had an inside person and better yet, she could teach me how to make the basic ones. I was set and my collection started. It would be a year or two later when I would find a design and instructions on how to make better ones in, of all places, a cereal box. After much practice, I was able to make half way decent knotted friendship bracelets.

The 1980s had a host of crazes that people followed, jelly shoes/bracelets, neon colored clothing, big hair, and Swatch watches, to name a few. It was a fashion trend that exploded and even created a meaning for each color. Why? Because having a friendship bracelet made out of only one color is, well… boring. Here are a few of what some of the colors meant:

• Red – love, joy
• Orange – pacifism, sexuality, fire, energy. 
• Yellow – beauty, summer, gold, money. 
• Green – nature, harmony,good luck. 
• Light Blue – friendship, harmony, calmness.

For me, my bracelets contained colors I liked or that were given to me. The meaning became relevant to the person or circumstance in which I got them.
