While sitting in my study recently, I was thinking of new topics to write about when suddenly I was thinking about things from my childhood I missed and things that are still around but have somehow changed in various ways. My mind was transported back to my childhood when I was obsessed with  small braided bracelets I wore through most of my childhood. That led to this article. Enjoy!

Who doesn’t know what a friendship bracelet is? Better yet, how many of you have one on right this very minute? I would argue that it is probably more than ten people will have something like it. As a child of the 80s, friendship bracelets were super popular. Everyone had them and I wanted one, as well. They defined a generation and still can be found gracing counter space in stores today.

While their popularity hasn’t diminished all that much most people know very little about this wide spread fashion accessory. Have you ever wondered about friendship bracelets, where they started, what they mean, and why are they still popular? Knotting a Connection: A Timeless Tale of Friendship Bracelets

More than just colorful threads, friendship bracelets are woven with a rich history and a powerful message. From their possible roots in ancient civilizations to their vibrant resurgence in the 1970s, these simple bands have transcended trends to become enduring symbols of connection. Whether exchanged as tokens of affection, worn for self-expression, or crafted with hidden wishes, friendship bracelets offer a unique way to celebrate the bonds we share.

I remember the very first time I saw a friendship bracelet. It was on the wrist of my best friend in fifth grade. It was a simple braided band of colored embroidery floss. As a child I never wore jewelry (other than a watch)  but I wanted this amazing woven beauty. I figured someone I knew must know something about them. As luck would have it, my cousins that lived in Roanoke, Virginia were those people. My older cousin Sonya not only knew about them, wore several, but was also a creator of them. Of course my city cousins would know, they lived in the city.

**Side note – My sister and I always considered Roanoke, Va a large city. As kids, we were traveling to Roanoke one night and we were riding in the very back of our hatchback and we happened to see these spires of what looked like a castle rise into the skyline. Immediately, we both thought we had somehow gotten transported to Disneyland. Sadly, it was just a glorified Catholic Church. Nonetheless, it cemented in our collective memories that this was IN FACT a big city.

My hopes had been answered, I had an inside person and better yet, she could teach me how to make the basic ones. I was set and my collection started. It would be a year or two later when I would find a design and instructions on how to make better ones in, of all places, a cereal box. After much practice, I was able to make half way decent knotted friendship bracelets.

Friendship Bracelets: A Timeless Symbol of Connection

While the exact origin remains debated, the history of friendship bracelets stretches far back and their popularity has ebbed and flowed throughout different eras. Let’s delve into their journey:

Ancient Roots:

  • Possible ancestors: Decorative knots used in China as early as 481-221 BC and similar traditions in Central and South America suggest a long-standing history of using knots for adornment and symbolism.
  • Indigenous connections: Evidence points to Central and South American indigenous cultures as the likely birthplace of the modern friendship bracelet. Tradition says they exchanged them as tokens of friendship, often wishing on them as they were tied.

Modern Rise and Fall:

  • 1970s: Friendship bracelets gained mainstream popularity in the United States during this era, influenced by growing interest in ethnic jewelry and the counterculture movement.
  • 1980s: The 1980s saw a surge in their popularity due to:
    • Social activism: Bracelets were used to raise awareness about human rights issues in Guatemala.
    • DIY craze: The ease of making them with simple materials fueled their appeal amongst children and adults alike.
  • 1990s and beyond: Popularity waned somewhat in the 1990s, but friendship bracelets never truly went out of style. They maintain a presence in various forms, particularly amongst younger generations.

1980s: The Era Where Friendship Bracelets Became Threads of Pop Culture

The 1980s witnessed friendship bracelets explode from niche craft to cultural phenomenon. But what fueled this vibrant trend? A confluence of factors intertwined to create the perfect storm of popularity:

  • DIY Craze: The 80s were all about expressing individuality through self-made creations. Friendship bracelets, with their simple materials and endless customization possibilities, perfectly fit the bill. Kids and adults alike embraced the fun and social aspect of crafting them together.
  • Pop Culture Powerhouse: Celebrities like Madonna and Lisa Bonet sported friendship bracelets, instantly catapulting them into the fashion mainstream. This celebrity endorsement further fueled the desire to own and wear these colorful symbols of connection.
  • Symbolism and Self-Expression: Beyond just trendy accessories, friendship bracelets offered a way to express personal style and belonging. The intricate patterns and chosen colors could hold hidden meanings, inside jokes, or wishes shared between friends, adding a unique layer of personalization.

These intertwined threads woven together a cultural tapestry where friendship bracelets became more than just adornments; they transformed into vibrant symbols of self-expression, social awareness, and the enduring power of connection.

The 1980s had a host of crazes that people followed, jelly shoes/bracelets, neon colored clothing, big hair, and Swatch watches, to name a few. It was a fashion trend that exploded and even created a meaning for each color. Why? Because having a friendship bracelet made out of only one color is, well… boring. Here are a few of what some of the colors meant:

  • Red – love, joy
  • Orange – pacifism, sexuality, fire, energy.
  • Yellow – beauty, summer, gold, money.
  • Green – nature, harmony,good luck.
  • Light Blue – friendship, harmony, calmness.

For me, my bracelets contained colors I liked or that were given to me. The meaning became relevant to the person or circumstance in which I got them.
