Lace up your sneakers and get ready to hit the ground running! Whether you’re sprinting like a cheetah or taking a leisurely jog like a laid-back sloth, this guide will unveil the top 5 running gear essentials, plus a bonus tip, every runner needs to conquer the track, trail, or sidewalk with style and comfort.

When I started running, all I had was a pair of sweat shorts, a t-shirt that didn’t fit anymore, and a busted pair of sneakers. Boy was I out of the loop. After the first two months of enduring painful runs, I decided to commit to my journey and invest in some new gear. Savings tips, Amazon is your friend. With a little research, you can find the types of running kit you need at a fraction of the cost. In fact, you may even find sales for some of those name brand items.

So let’s dive right into this exciting adventure!

1. Sneakers that rock

We all know that the foundation of a great run starts with the right pair of running shoes. Your shoes are your ride-or-die pals on the pavement or trail. Having the right pair can make all the difference, like slipping into fluffy clouds made for your feet. There are various brands and models to choose from, but some great options for beginners are:

  1. Nike Revolution 5*: These shoes are like comfy clouds for your feet, with excellent cushioning and support.
  2. New Balance Fresh Foam Arishi V3*: They’re lightweight, making it easier to zip around like a superhero.
  3. Brooks Ghost 14*: Known for their smooth ride and excellent comfort, these are like a best friend for your feet.

Shoes are as varied as runners and each are made for different types of environments, as well as runners. Think of it like this, you would take a Lamborghini off-roading would you? So, why would you pick a pair of basketball shoes to go trail running? Why is it important? Depending on the type of running you are planning, the shoe will help support you and keep you from getting injured.

For trail running, my favorite are the Nike Air Zoom Terra Kiger 8. There is enough traction on them to conquer just about any trail you can throw at them. They are light and responsive to ensure you are maximizing your energy expenditure where you need it… in the actual run. For street running or treadmill are the Brooks Trace line. Again, they are light on your feet, offering the best support and response to help with the beating your knees are going to take.

2. Clothes make the runner

The perfect activewear can make a difference in your running experience, take it from personal experience, those old cotton tees are so last year. Once they get wet, they cling to you and don’t allow your skin to breathe or pull the moisture away. This can lead to chaffing and just a purely unenjoyable run. Opt for moisture-wicking fabrics that’ll keep you dry, cool, and feeling like you’re running through the clouds, minus the turbulence. Don’t forget that those moisture wicking fabrics whisk away sweat faster than a than a politician avoiding answering a question.

Look for shirts, shorts, and socks made from materials like Dri-FIT, Climalite, or Coolmax. These fabrics help pull sweat away from your skin, so you stay comfy and cool.

  1. Nike Dri-FIT T-Shirts*: These are like wearable air conditioners, keeping you dry even on the hottest days.
  2. Adidas Climalite Shorts*: They’re super lightweight and perfect for quick sprints.
  3. Under Armour HeatGear Socks*: No more soggy feet – these socks keep your feet cozy and dry.

I get it, buying brand name active wear is expensive, however you are also ensuring that you are getting the best fabrics to reduce heat, sweat, and keep you comfortable while you are churning miles. But, if you are operating on a budget, you can still get some good pieces to get you started, until you can afford something different. Check out this video by This Messy Happy on how to outfit your running kit more affordable and how well it works.

3. Slip into socks

Don’t forget socks, they are just as important in your running kit.  Socks provide a protective barrier against blisters and  those dreaded hotspots, when you are running. Many people think that ill fitting shoes cause blisters when the truth often lies in buying the wrong types of socks.  Remember your everyday cotton socks will not do the job. They absorb sweat, bunch up in your shoes, and dont provide the needed cushioning you need while running. This will result in blisters and painful time on the trail.

Look for socks that have quick drying fabrics that are man-made, like polyester or nylon. These socks also fit more close to the body and reduce the possibility of slipping around on you. You can even pick some up that add additional arch support to give your feet a little more of a break. Having the wrong sock could lead to blisters or worse and that will set your running experience back a few days, as you heal.

4. Quenching thirst

This one is more depending on the length of run, weather, and where you live. If you are running less than 90 minutes, many people can get away without having to worry about carrying a hydration pack. However, if you live in more hot and humid climates or you are planning your summer day runs, it is best to consider having something you can carry with you to keep you hydrated and moving forward.

Running can make you feel like a superhero, but even superheroes need to stay hydrated. A hydration system, like a water bottle or hydration belt, is like your very own superpower potion.

  1. CamelBak Podium Water Bottle*: It’s like a magic flask that lets you sip while you’re on the move.
  2. Nathan SpeedDraw Plus Insulated Flask*: This one’s like a trusty sidekick, with an adjustable hand strap for easy sipping.

Maybe you prefer not carrying your water bottle while you are running. There is science that says carrying anything in your hand while running can throw off your technique and have you overcompensating. Those things can lead to injury. Just make sure that the empty weight is manageable first, once you add water it will become much more heavy.

  1. Budget option. Nathan QuickStart 2.0 4L. As the name implies, it holds 4L of water and comes in at 9.5oz empty. It is great for shorter runs and is breathable. It is a bit more heavy than some other pack out there. Check around for the best pricing
  2. Best overall pack. Salomon Sense Pro 10 Hydration Vest. It comes in at 8.80z empty, which is less than the budget option. Best performance and comfort due to being lightweight and very breathable. The only real downsides is that the flasks used can often be uncomfortable to wear in the pack and it costs $180.

A water bottle that doesn’t leak is like gold on the run. Stay hydrated like a pro and watch those miles melt away. Bonus: pretending it’s a microphone for your impromptu running karaoke sessions.

5. Runner’s gadgets

It’s not all about the shoes and clothes. Sometimes you need a little extra to make that run enjoyable. Below are a few added essentials that can help you perform better, deal with problematic weather conditions, or carry exactly what you need to get through that run.

  1. Running Belt or fanny packs. Gone are the days of holding your keys, phone, or snacks awkwardly during your run. Running belts and fanny packs keep all of your essentials close at hand. It’s like having a tiny kangaroo pouch, ready to store your precious belongings. Be sure to choose a vibrant color or pattern, making it a stylish statement that complements your running outfit. Check out the Flipbelt, this is my go to waist belt for all of my runs. I can keep my phone and keys out of the way, safe, and secure without missing a step.
  2. Headphones. What could be better than running to the beat of your favorite tunes? Enter the world of magical music-pumping gadgets. Slip on a pair of wireless earbuds and they’ll keep the jams flowing without any annoying wires tangling up your run. Just remember, dancing while running should only be attempted by the advanced runners!
  3. Smart watch. Meet your new trusty sidekick – GPS tracking, heart rate monitoring, and all that jazz. It’s like having a personal coach minus the whistles and stopwatch. This is almost essential if you want to work on Zone training or just keeping track of how far you have gone. Combine that with a chest heart rate monitor and you have the best equipment you can use, at home, for optimizing your running and working to improve it.
  4. Sunglasses and a hat/sweatband. When you’re out in the sun, you need to protect your eyes from those bright rays. Sunglasses and a cap are your go-to gear to shield yourself from the sun and make your running adventure even more enjoyable. Sunglasses will also allow you to be able to see your trail more clearly so you dont injure yourself. The sweatband will ensure that all of the moisture you are perspiring doesnt end up in your eyes.

Bonus Gear – Recovery tools

Most people focus on getting ready for or the actual run, forgetting a part that is just as important… Recovery! Your run doesnt end when you get off the trail, it was just the beginning. Now comes time to take care of the hard work you just put in. Add some recovery time to your schedule and your muscles will thank you for it.

Foam rollers and massage guns are as essential as socks and moisture wicking fabrics. They will aid you in working out tough knots and easing the soreness you just inflicted onto your body. These devices will aid in muscle recovery and enhancing blood flow back to those areas to help your body relax and build muscle.

Dont forget to stretch, just 10 to 15 minutes is all you need to help speed up recovery time and lessen those painful movements. Take care of your body, it is the only one you have.

Crossing the finish line

So, there you have it, the six game-changers that’ll take your running from “okay” to “oh, wow!” Whether you’re a seasoned marathoner or just getting started, having the right gear can make every step feel like a victory lap.
Remember, it’s not just about crossing the finish line; it’s about enjoying the journey and doing it in style. So lace up, gear up, and let’s hit the road – the adventure awaits. Happy running!
