Bidding Farewell to Azeroth: Why WoW Veterans Seek New Adventures on Switch
Maybe this sounds familiar. The year was 2004 and a new video game came onto the market. This game connected you will millions of other players so you could quest together and kill monsters. In return you had a chance to receive epic loot and have a great time. This was the promise of World of Warcraft. Before this time, I was left playing RPG (role playing games) like Diablo and StarCraft. The idea of an open world where you could spend days questing with friends seemed a dream. That was until it wasnt.

Switch vs. PC: Can the Hybrid Console Capture the True MMORPG Experience?
The Nintendo Switch isn’t just a console, it’s a chameleon of gaming, transforming from a vibrant living room centerpiece to a portable entertainment powerhouse. The Switch can give you immersive large scale adventure on the television and then seamlessly transforms so you can play your games on the go. The joy-con (while plagued with the drift issue) are innovative in how they work and can be changed out to match your mood. NO matter whether you are hardcore or more of a casual gamer, the Switch offers its unique charm to satisfy all yoru needs. But is it the best for a massive multiplier open world role playing game?
While the Nintendo Switch offers a fantastic selection of games, it’s important to acknowledge that it can’t fully replicate the MMORPG experience found on PC for several key reasons:
- Limited Selection and Power: Compared to the vast library of PC MMORPGs, the Switch has a significantly smaller selection, often focused on specific genres like JRPGs. Additionally, the Switch’s hardware restricts the complexity and fidelity achievable compared to powerful gaming PCs, which can impact the scale, detail, and graphical quality of MMORPGs.
- Control Scheme and Targeting: MMORPGs often rely heavily on keyboard and mouse controls for precise targeting and efficient ability management. While the Switch offers controller options, they may not always translate intuitively to the complex skill rotations and targeting systems inherent in many PC MMORPGs.
- Performance and Stability: Large-scale battles and open-world environments in MMORPGs can push hardware to its limits. While the Switch delivers admirable performance for its size, it may struggle with maintaining smooth gameplay and stable framerates during demanding scenarios compared to a high-end gaming PC.
- Modding and Community Integration: The PC gaming community thrives on player-created mods and custom content, allowing for deeper customization and unique experiences. The Switch, due to its closed ecosystem, lacks this modding potential, which can limit the long-term engagement and community involvement for dedicated MMORPG players.
- Subscription Costs and Value: Many PC MMORPGs operate on a subscription model, while the Switch typically features one-time purchases. However, subscription-based PC titles often offer expansive content updates and ongoing support, while Switch games may lack the same level of ongoing development and value proposition.
It’s important to remember that the Switch shines in other areas, making it a fantastic platform for specific types of games and experiences. However, for those seeking the full breadth and depth of the MMORPG genre, a powerful PC remains the undeniable champion.

From Warcraft to Borderlands: Top Switch Games That Will Satisfy Your WoW Cravings
World of Warcraft may have held your heart captive for years, but are you ready to embark on new adventures beyond Azeroth? The Nintendo Switch beckons with a treasure trove of games that capture the essence of WoW while offering unique twists and exciting possibilities. From sprawling open worlds teeming with fantastical creatures to epic battles that test your strategic prowess, the Switch has something for every WoW veteran seeking a fresh adventure.
Here are five games to satisfy your World of Warcraft yearnings:

Borderlands
A Looter-Shooter Classic: Explore the chaotic world of Pandora in Borderlands, a classic looter-shooter RPG. Uncover a massive arsenal of guns, each with unique abilities and playstyles. Choose your Vault Hunter, customize their skills, and blast your way through hordes of enemies and bosses in a quest for legendary loot. Experience the iconic cel-shaded art style and irreverent humor that defined the genre.
This has to be one of my favorite looter/shooter games. You can change stats on your character with any new upgrade. The action is crazy but fun, with an open world to rival any other MMORPG. The artstyle is what keeps me coming back, a cross between comic book stylized animation and computer graphics. The best thing about this game is that you will never run out of weapons, now ammo⦠that can be different depending on your play style.

Monster Hunter Rise
If you’re looking for action-packed combat and challenging boss battles, Monster Hunter Rise is a fantastic choice. While not an RPG, this action game offers a similar sense of progression and world exploration through its monster hunting gameplay loop. This game puts you in the role of a hunter who must track down and slay massive beasts using a variety of weapons and gadgets. It offers a unique blend of exploration, action, and customization that will keep you hooked for hours.
Depending on what you like most about WoW, the Monster Hunter franchise has something for you. Killing bosses in the game will give you resources that can be used to craft bigger and better weapons and gear. There is a cooking mechanic that is reminiscent to WoW. There are updates that can allow you to take part in world events but you do lose a little in the realm of Raids and Dungeons.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the WIld:This open-world adventure game is a masterpiece of exploration and discovery. With a vast world to explore, countless secrets to uncover, and a deep combat system, Breath of the Wild will keep you coming back for more.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom expands upon the open-world exploration of its predecessor, Breath of the Wild, inviting players to new heights. As Link, ascend into the floating islands above Hyrule, utilizing newfound abilities to navigate the expanded world. Engage in thrilling combat, solve challenging puzzles, and uncover the secrets that threaten the kingdom. Tears of the Kingdom delivers an unforgettable adventure for both longtime Zelda fans and newcomers alike.
Both games offer a massive open world system for you to enjoy and does not limit where you start, in most cases. The quest do work on a progression system where you need to complete some minor prerequisites before moving on. Crafting was introduce and expanded upon in Tears of the Kingdom. The new fuse system allows you to create any kind of weapon of vehicle you can imagine, to aid you in your progression.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3
Embark on an epic journey in Xenoblade Chronicles 3, a sprawling open-world JRPG for the Nintendo Switch. Aiding Noah and Mio, from hostile nations locked in a perpetual conflict, you’ll guide a diverse cast of six characters through a grand narrative exploring themes of life, loss, and defying fate.
Traverse breathtaking environments, battle unique creatures in strategic real-time combat, and uncover the mysteries of a world teetering on the brink of annihilation. With refined gameplay mechanics, a captivating story, and an unforgettable soundtrack, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 offers a truly unforgettable RPG experience.
If you are the type of person who enjoyed the mathematics behind MMORPGs, this the Xenoblade franchise may be right for you. With the talent system, you can see in real numbers, how changes can affect your gameplay. Similar to WoW there are many instanced real world events that can offer you great gear and a deep storyline backed into the questing and gameplay that will satisfy any gamer who loves a good story.

Warframe
Okay, so this isnt a Switch exclusive, either, but it plays really well on the Nintendo Switch. That alone should be a reason to check it out. A fast-paced cooperative shooter with a unique movement system and a vast arsenal of weapons and abilities. It features free-to-play mechanics and regular content updates.
Warframe brings its frenetic cooperative action to the Nintendo Switch, offering a deep and engaging experience for free. Don the armor of a Tenno warrior and unleash an arsenal of customizable weapons and abilities on hordes of enemies across diverse planets. Team up with friends for online missions, conquer challenging boss battles, and personalize your Warframe with unique gear and cosmetics. Warframe on Switch offers a constantly evolving universe to explore and endless customization options, all at no initial cost. And what is better than an MMORPG with no monthly costs.
I was introduced to this game by a friend who plays in the band The Birthday Massacre, his enjoyment and talking about how fun it was lead me to trying it out. I have to say that the graphics are amazing, especially on the Switch. The endless customizations and in game events makes it feel like WoW but with a sci-fi spin. If you havenāt tried it, then stop reading, go to your Switch or your Nintendo account and download it this very minute. You wont regret it.
